Kamel Mennour is pleased to present a special duo show for the Abu Dhabi Art Fair juxtaposing two major artists: Daniel Buren (born in 1938, in France) and Ugo Rondinone (born in 1964, in Switzerland).
The exhibition includes an ensemble of five marble and granite pieces by Daniel Buren, punctuated by 8.7 cm wide white and naturally coloured stripes, using the famous visual tool he started to use in 1965. Begun in 2015, this site‑responsive series of works, with its title borrowed from the origin of the stones used to make them, shapes and lends a tempo to the space of the booth.
On the adjacent walls, two “Mandala Paintings” by Ugo Rondinone stare at each other like psychedelic cyclops’ eyes. These twin abstract targets, composed of blurred concentric yellow and golden circles, are deeply rooted in both a Renaissance tradition, and the history of abstract art. The spray‑painted tondi create an optical illusion that disrupts our perception by arbitrarily freezing an endless rotation. Opening an imaginary vortex into the walls, the paintings evoke an infinite tunnel where the gaze would necessarily lose itself.
The many veins of Buren’s marbles echoe the raw aspects of Rondinone's rock-shaped sculpture made of gravel and concrete.
This rock stands in the center of the booth. we run through a DESERT on burning feet, all of us are glowing our faces look twisted. brings an organic and unrefined presence to these geometrical mural works. Riddled with holes from natural erosion and evoking a world in miniature, or a distorted skull, this stone is a giant replica of a Chinese scholar’s rock, traditionally used as ornaments for reflection. According to the artist, it creates “the sensation of an ever-changing and infinite world within a finite object”.
This special project presents a vibrant dialogue between geometric figures and organic shapes, and offers a simultaneous experience of the works of two internationally acclaimed artists. |
